Not Laptop Reviews, But Interesting News — Microsoft Gives Away Laptops
OK. So I know all of you have heard that Microsoft was giving away laptops wanting to get the users to give their opinion on Vista. They were not looking for Laptop reviews. What they got was a bunch of negative press. I think people were bitter that they weren’t the ones selected for these screaming laptops! I mean who would turn down a free fully loaded $2,299 laptop? Come on people.

Yowza! Let the notebook reviews battles begin over getting a free fully loaded laptop from Microsoft! Poor Brandon was raked over the coals by some Microsoft haters. I think, if they received the free laptop, they would have been very happy. Bitterness is such a terrible thing. I’m sure I’ll get blitzed now too! But, hey, I DIDN’T get a free laptop to review!
Notebook Reviews — Gateway NX570X gets a 7.8 out of 10
Cnet.com does the notebook reviews on many systems. Here is the summary of what they say:
The good: Sophisticated look belies budget price; highly configurable; excellent battery life.
The bad: Limited to integrated graphics; no PC Card slot; slightly heavier than the average midsize laptop.
The bottom line: The very configurable and affordable Gateway NX570X makes it easy to build a reasonably powerful–and visually appealing–machine on a fixed budget.

So Cnet.com gives the Asus G1 a 6.9 out of 10. The notebook reviews by the users give it an 8.7 out of ten! Wow! That’s a huge percentage difference. This is why when I shop for laptops, I look at laptop reviews from both the “experts” and the end-users. Remember, most experts are reviewing the notebooks from a lab with a purely technical look. Don’t get me wrong. This type of review is essential to understand the inner workings of the machine being reviewed.
Having said that, user laptop reviews are key for “rubber to the road” understanding. Make sure though that you read several reviews from different readers. The more user reviews you have for a particular laptop, the better the picture. Quantity tends to filter out the extremes and you get a very “real” feel.
