I've purchased the vostro 1710 three months back but the computer was return to Dell for troubleshooting for 5 weeks....

There is nothing wrong with the computer operating hardware or software. It can function decently but it fails to perform as feature which I need it badly.

I need the Computer Lid to be closed and "Do Nothing". I need the computer to "Sleep" after xx minutes. For the demonstration purpose, I set it to 1 minute "Sleep".

With the Lid close, wait for 1 minute, the computer goes into "Sleep" mode. Once I open up the Lid, there is no response. I press the "Power" button once, it just hang there. Press longer time, it will force shutdown the system. Press one more time on the "Power" button, occasionally it can resume, but it takes at least 30 seconds to 1 minutes to resume. And most of the time, it will have the Windows Error Recovery black screen pops up.

I have received the 2nd set (the replacement Unit) from Dell, but still showing the same problem. Worst still, I have specifically informed Dell to carry out this feature testing prior to send out the 2nd set, and it failed! Not sure if Dell actually did the test or not!!!

I am now still pending their troubleshooting and investigation outcome! This issue has been pending for 6 weeks and moving-on.

I wonder if Dell actually listen to Customer and serving to Customer?

You have a great list of resources here. I wanted to suggest an additional resource for product research. Become.com is a comparison search engine, designed to help consumers doing product research. If users search using the blue Research button, a set of reviews will pop up on the products being searched on. This is a great tool for those who don't quite know what they are looking for in terms of a computer and need a little more info.

Thanks!

Is there a laptop/notebook just for the internet, games and watching movies (no need for other programs - he's just a kid so email and word and etc is for sure not needed at all)?

Also I'm just a worker not an executive so something that the average person can afford.

Comment on The Best Wireless Laptop Is Only A “Connection” Away by Hallie Horn

I read the article about the best wireless laptops and I totally agree that there is much more to consider than a wireless card alone. I have found, after owning several different laptops, that the Toshiba laptops have excellent wireless capability and wanted to write to recommend Toshiba for those who place wireless capability near the top of their list when selecting a laptop. That being said, I have found that current model HP laptops seem to fail miserably at staying connected to a wireless connection. I have read that HP has admitted to having some issues with connectivity, however, it seems that the only fix is a new motherboard. I decided to write this because, although there are certainly more important things to consider when purchasing a laptop, wireless connectivity is an important issue for most people buyin a laptop. I purchased two HP laptops for my daughters and a different HP laptop for my own use. The two HP Touch Smart laptops have some difficulties maintaining wireless connectivity, but nothing compared to the HP X16-1025NR. I purchased one in November and returned it to Best Buy the next day because of problems with the network adapter. The second one had the same problem and Best Buy would not allow me to return it. I had to go through the Better Business Bureau and finally exchanged it six months later. My first mistake was to purchase my laptop at Best Buy, but my mother allowed me to use her Best Buy account to take advantage of the interest free financing. At any rate, I obviously had to exchange the HP at Best Buy despite my desire to build my own or order direct with customizations. I exchanged the HP for one of Best Buy's Blue Label laptops. I did not go with another HP. I picked up the Toshiba Satellite E105 and the wireless connectivity is much better. I do not have to configure settings everytime I log on. It picks up every router that I have been in range of easily and I have had no issues with it dropping the connection. This is not a laptop for gamers or those who do video editing. The graphics card cannot handle 3D graphics. Although I would have preferred a better graphics card, the bottom line was that this laptop had the the other specs that I was looking for and some nice additional features. I have owned a Lenova laptop and a Gateway prior. As far as wireless connectivity goes, I have found the Toshiba to be superior. Best of luck in choosing a laptop. I highly recommend doing research and choosing a laptop that has all of the specs one needs before purchasing. Returns on laptops can be difficult and are often subject to a restocking fee unless there is a manufacturer's defect. Unless you have researched the available laptop options, making a purchase for anything other than for an inexpensive alternative to your desktop is not a wise decision.

I am a kid who is looking for a laptop. This was not the best help. You can get a laptop for 300$. Why pay 500? But thanks for the somewhat useful advice
